Review: Combat Storm

Strategy Wave Studios is a game development organization based out of Ontario, Canada. Strategy Wave Studios specializes in developing miniature wargames, city skirmish battle games and alternative boardgames.

From the publisher

COMBAT STORM is a table-top miniature wargame where players use green and tan plastic army men as their game pieces and a large playing area, such as a large table or living room floor as their battlefield!

The COMBAT STORM Rulebook is fully illustrated and features a high quality layout and design. It is 72 pages thick and packed full of information. The rulebook is printed out using a high quality printing system and bound with cerlox binding.

The rulebook for Combat Storm is a small softcover, with 72 black and white pages. The book contains the following:

  • Six different classes of soldiers for each army: Riflemen, Special Forces Soldiers, Support Infantrymen, Demolitions Experts,Snipers, and Anti-Armor Experts.

  • Rules for driving and using vehicles, including Tanks and Transports.
  • Terrain rules covering all types of basic land that battles may take place on.
  • Cover rules for when soldiers take cover behind objects.
  • Close Combat rules for when the action gets up close and personal.
  • A unique weapon upgrade system which allows players to spend points on additional items for their weapons such as laser sights, bayonets, grenade launchers, and more.
  • Army-building rules and point system.
  • Six different missions, each featuring a detailed map, a mission briefing, and tactical objectives.
  • Three additional variations of game-play: Annihilation, Protect the Sergeant, and Capture
    the Flag.
  • Instructions on how to build a gaming table.
  • Command Sheet to keep track of your squads, weapon upgrades and equipment.

The Good

Combat Storm is a seriously great game. Operation Plastic uses statistics for each type of soldier and vehicle, as well as for their weapons. This makes the players rely more on strategy and tactics rather than on just pure luck.

This is not only a great “beginner’s” wargame, but also a fun game for veterans of the hobby.

The Bad

It’s hard to say “bad”… but I found the price a bit iffy, as the book is rather small. And for some people (like myself) – they may find getting plastic soldiers and such very difficult, depending on where they live. I had to rely on my very expensive William Britain figures in order to test out the game – and as I had no armor or vehicle support I was unable to use those rules to much extent.

The Ugly

None.
