Review: Field Commander: Rommel

Dan Verssen Games (DVG) came into existence in the summer of 2002. The three members of the company are: Dan Verssen, Holly Verssen, and Chris Richardson. The company was formed in response to the need for a legal business entity when they began design of the Z-Cardz Collectible Card Game.

DVG usually has about 5 games in development at any given time. As of late, they have also started to team up with talented computer game developers in order to bring some of their classic games to a whole new environment.

Rommel was designed by Dan Verssen and is the first game in our new “Field Commander” solitaire series of historical strategy board games. You get to take command of General Erwin Rommel’s forces in 3 exciting WWII campaigns: France 1940, North Africa 1941, and D-Day 1944. An easy to use game system manages the Allied movement, combat, and reinforcements.

The counters will be beautifully printed and die cut with full color on both sides. The current idea for the box size is 9″ x 12″ x 1.5″. I hope to have Cartamundi do all the printing and production work. They are a great company to work with and have a lot of experience printing games.

As your units win battles, their stats will increase.

Each campaign comes with a list of historical options. You can select any of these options to modify the campaign, and its difficulty level. This allows each campaign to be replayed many times and never be the same twice.

The game comes with “Career” rules that allow you to link the campaigns. The outcome of one campaign affects your start-up conditions for the next campaign.

Field Commander: Rommel includes:

  • 3 Full Color Campaign Maps (11″ x 17″)
  • 176 Full Color 5/8″ counters
  • 1 6-sided die
  • 1 Campaign Log Sheet
  • Rulebook

Play

Field Commander: Rommel is a solitaire game, allowing you to play these scenarios:

  • Ghost Division’s drive through France in 1940
  • The Afrika Korps in North Africa 1941 – 42
  • The defense of the Normandy coast during the D-Day invasion

A game can take about 2 hours.

The Good

Any game that allows you to play as the legendary Erwin Rommel is off to a good start. The game has an overall solid design that allows you to rapid quick solitaire sessions and have a great evening.

The Bad

As fun as this game is, I’m sadly not sure that the price is justified.

The Ugly

None.
