Ancient Warfare Newsletter December 2008

Issues II-6 & III-1Ancient Warfare II-6

Ancient Warfare II-6 (Rome in Crisis: the third century AD) is on its way to subscribers worldwide. If you’ve missed it, or if you’re curious what’s about to hit your mailbox, have a look at the editorial plan on www.ancient-warfare.com (or just click the cover image on the homepage).

Issue III-1 is already in the works and I am very happy to see a wide chronological spread in the articles dealing with that issue’s theme: War as a livelihood: Mercenaries in the Ancient World. There will be articles on Nubian mercenaries in Egypt, Hellenistic Mercenaries (of course), the mercenary revolt in Carthage after the end of the First Punic War and we will even look into mercenaries serving Imperial Rome. Issue III-1 is scheduled for release of February 12th 2009.

Ancient Warfare’s first Special

Next year we will publish our first ever Special issue. Think Ancient Warfare, but more pages (76), no normal features and a perfect bound heavy stock cover. The theme, well, that has to be the Varian disaster (aka the battle of the Teutoburg forest), 2000 years ago in 2009. This special will be available for pre-order at a discounted price in early January. And before anyone asks: no, this is not part of your regular subscription.

Podcasts 5 and 6

It’s hugely overdue, but this Sunday (the 21st), we’ll have another Skype-phone conference to record the 5th podcast. Murray Dahm and I will be joined by Mark Schwartz, who wrote ‘Warriors at the dawn of time’ in AW II.5. Hopefully Angus will be able to upload the result somewhere in the Christmas week, so you’ll have something to listen to, when you’ve had your fill of food, drinks and family.

Planning ahead this time, the 6th podcast will be recorded mid January and should be out later that month. Looks like we’ll be able to have quite a few of the authors joining me and Murray. It ought to be an interesting experience trying to coordinate five or six people on the phone and make sure they don’t interrupt eachother continuously!

Artist prints

We have followed up on the polls of last October. Three prints are now, well, being printed. Johnny Shumate’s ‘Batavian auxiliary’, Graham Sumner’s ‘Caesarian centurions’ and Igor Dzis’ ‘Battle of Magnesia’ are now available in our shop. They are each A4 sized and printed on 300 gsm paper with an extra protective finish.

For now, happy holidays and best wishes for 2009
