Review: Plastic Warrior

Plastic Warrior was launched in 1985 as a non-profit making newsletter with the aim of putting plastic soldier collectors in touch with each other at a time when the established modeling and collecting press ignored their interests. From the start PW was written by collectors for collectors and was the first ever publication to seriously cover soft plastic toy figures.

Contents

Plastic Warrior is now a glossy magazine published six times per year, distributed in 30 different countries around the world, also providing a range of special issues and manufacturers checklists devoted to plastic toy soldiers and model figures.

The 24-page magazine also includes news, classified ads, and show reports. It is heavy in B&W pictures.

Issues Reviewed

Plastic Warrior 122 (month unknown, presumably from 2007), containing an article on plastic flats, the J-K Stagecoach, Cherilea Swoppets, Media Models, and an interview with The Weston Toy Company.

I also received the “One Inch Warrior” #4 issue, which is a very similar magazine (this one had 28 pages) for smaller-scale plastic figures.

The Good

As the magazine is filled with a variety of topics by different writers, there is a wide range of interesting and detailed articles. You can feel the passion for the figures which demonstrates a true love of the genre.

Plastic Warrior has a small-press charm that literally seeps out of it’s pages. While my review copy was rather outdated, I can only imagine that newer issues have the same great content.

The Bad

I was more surprised than disappointed that the editor-in-chief seemed unaware that Plastic Warrior would be a great resource for wargamers, in that the very point of these figures is for wargaming. I have noticed that there are a lot of plastic figure manufacturers out there that share this opinion, and I do find it a shame. This however, has no real bearing on the magazine itself, which was quite excellent.

The Ugly

None.
