Dark Sword Miniatures eNewsletter – New Frog Greens Posted

Hello fellow miniature enthusiasts -

I hope you are all having a nice spring as we start to thaw out from a really cold and nasty winter.

We have two new greens posted up this week…The Frogs are back folks! Yes, we have two new Frogs to bolster your ranks of the Frog Court.

1. A Frog Sage sculpted by Dave Summers

2. A Frog Fly Catcher sculpted by Dave Summers.

Be sure to swing by the Dark Sword site and check them out. I also have tons of amazing new GRRM painted mini pics to post up over the coming weeks. Jen Haley, Marike Reimer, Anne Foerster, Noel and of course Mr. Matt Verzani have all been busy painting up a good number of Dark Sword Miniatures for George’s personal collection. George has been kind enough to showcase these miniatures on our site. His painted miniature collection is starting to rival my own.

On another note – I am actually taking a long weekend for myself to focus on this miniature hobby I love so much. It is official – I am attending ReaperCon May 14-17, 2009 in Denton TX at Reaper HQ!

I am heading to ReaperCon for a nice long weekend of miniatures galore. I am signing up for numerous painting classes with some of the top painters from around the world and just hanging out with folks who love miniatures as much as I do. It will be a fun-filled weekend of focusing on the miniature hobby (with a big focus on painting for me) without having to worry about working a tradeshow floor for 8-10 hours a day. Be sure to check it out as I have heard nothing but praise and good things for this intimate event at Reaper HQ in Denton TX. If you are going, be sure to drop me a line and let me know so we can plan on meeting up while there to sling some paint together or just kick back and talk minis. I am really pumped for this event.

Head out to: www.reapermini.com and check out the information on this great event and while you are there be sure to check out their most excellent lineup of miniatures. Dark Sword sculptors Jeff Grace and Dennis Mize(RIP) have both sculpted miniatures for the Reaper ranges over the years. In addition they work with a good deal of other very talented sculptors (too many to name actually). My personal collection of Reaper Miniatures is gigantic as I have what my wife likes to call “an acute addiction to fine pewter”.

Switching gears here – I must take a moment of your time to let you know that the miniature painting community has lost a dear friend -

On Tuesday March 17, Heather Blush (HMGS East) announced via e-mail to the Origins Art Classes crew the following – “Judi awoke in distress around 3:00 AM Monday morning March 16th. EMTs were called and she was transported to an area hospital, but her heart stopped en route and she was pronounced dead on arrival. Judi was the ‘baby’ of the family, only 44 years old.” No cause was known at the time, but Heather maintained contact with Sue, Judi’s older sister.

Autopsy results were released yesterday. Heather wrote, “We now know that Judi died from a massive pulmonary embolism. This is a blood clot that forms typically in the legs, arms, pelvis or heart which then breaks off and travels becoming lodged in a lung artery. Pulmonary embolism is an extremely common and highly lethal condition that is a leading cause of death in all age groups. PE is the third most common cause of death in the US. It is the first or second most common cause of unexpected death in most age groups. This news doesn’t lessen our loss, but knowing something should help all of us make peace with this in time.”.

There will not be a funeral, per se, but instead cremation and a memorial service today, Friday, March 20th at Amasa Stone Chapel on the campus of Case Western University where Judi was both teaching and completing her PhD. The service will be from 3:00PM – 4:30PM. The address is 10940 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. (216) 368-8961.

The family welcomes everyone to attend the service, but asks not to have a lot of flowers sent. The family may ask that donations be made in Judi’s name to a cause to be named later. Cards to Judi’s mother with comments that celebrate Judi’s life and what she meant to others would be appreciated. Her address is:

Alene Lewis
14936 Carol Drive
Maple Heights, OH 44137

Judith was a class-act. She donated an acre of tree’s in the Amazon rain forest to be planted in my daughter Lillian’s honor back in January when Lillian passed away.

She will be missed by all who knew her and worked with her.

On other fronts, we are watching Smallville Season 5 right now and it has started off with a bang. We also watched Ghost Town with Ricky Gervaise and Greg Kinneir ( I think I got both spellings very wrong) and we both loved it.

Be sure to check out the Dark Sword site for our new figs and make it a great week folks.

Regards,

Jim
