Ancient Warfare Newsletter 2009

Jasper Oorthuys writes:

Ancient Warfare Special

Quite possibly the main reason for the lack of recent newsletters was that the Ancient Warfare Special 2009: The Varian Disaster was swallowing all our time and attention. That, however, is now over: the Special is in the care of the printer and should be available within the week. Anyone who pre-ordered it before it returns from the printer, will of course get it as soon as possible afterwards.
This 76-page booklet contains the following articles (and nothing else…):

  • Jona Lendering, ‘The sources’
  • Lindsay Powell, ‘Bella Germaniae: Augustan campaigns in Germania Magna’
  • Duncan Campbell, ‘Secrets from the soil: Roman fortifications in Germania’
  • Sidney Dean, ‘Varus and Arminius’
  • Adrian Murdoch, ‘The campaign of AD 9′
  • Ross Cowan and Christian Koepfer, ‘Augustan legionaries’
  • Michael Taylor and Christian Koepfer, ‘The Germanic warriors’
  • Paul McDonnell-Staff, ‘After Varus’
  • Jasper Oorthuys, ‘The Quest for Varus’
  • Jasper Oorthuys, ‘Tips for visitors’

Click here to order your copy (and if you do so before May 27th, you’ll still get it post-free!).

Podcasts

Continuing our recent history of stop-and-go podcasting: we’ve been trying to get a team of authors together for a podcast about the Wars of Alexander’s Successors, but failing technology and even extreme weather have prevented everyone who was available time-wise from joining in. In other words: we’re working on it and there will be a new podcast soon! To sweeten the deal, we’ll do a podcast to go with our Special issue (see above) as well. That should be coming in mid-June.

Book reviews

My call for book reviewers in our previous newsletter has been extremely successful. I’ve now got a long list of potential reviewers. However, not everyone has answered my questions regarding their knowledge and areas of interest: if you want to review books and expressed that already, please let me know the answers to those questions. Also, please note that I keep a list of books available for review on my blog, here. If you see a book there that matches your interest, please let me know, because this is a strictly ‘first come, first serve’ type of thing.

Book giveaway

Occassionally we get an extra copy of a new book. Instead of filling up our office space, we prefer to give it away. Here’s how: anyone who makes a purchase from www.ancient-warfare.com over the next ten days (between today May 26th and June 5th), will get their order number put in a big, virtual hat. We’ll randomly pick a number from that hat and the lucky winner will get a copy of Phil Sidnell’s book War Horse for free!
