Ode to RPG Blog II
Zachary Houghton of RPG Blog II posted an announcement late yesterday.
Among other things, Zach had this to say:
I don’t feel that in the long run, I can keep this blog up with the sort of quality I want from it. A lot of that is just realizing the limits of my own talent. Some of it is personal/family-related, but ultimately I’d rather do no blog at all than a poor one. This isn’t spur-of-the-moment, and I’ve taken the time to think it over.
I, like many others, have been following Zach since he opened the original RPG Blog in early 2006 – closed down in late 2006 and came back with all guns blazing in summer of 2007 with RPG Blog II.
Possibly the most annoying thing about a lot of RPG bloggers (and I guess bloggers in general) is the sense of self-importance they get after even the most modest of publicity. Sometimes it takes as little as a referral on a more popular website to set the lesser blogger’s ego into orbit.
This wasn’t ever the case with Zach. I read his blog because he wasn’t just interesting and affable, but because with every single post you could see the passion for what he was writing about. Zach is also a helpful, knowledgeable social butterfly (the guy is everywhere!) that is held in high regard in our often divided online community.
But Zach’s decisions to take a step back are his own, and those decisions must be respected regardless of how we personally feel. And believe me, I do not agree with him ever making a “poor” post, nor have I ever sensed an once of “mediocrity”.
I don’t anticipate my daily surfing of the ‘net quite as much any longer. And before I break into an Aerosmith ballad, I’ll end this post.
Thanks Zach.
