Flames of War Event: Dynamo 2010
Back in early August, I was invited to attend a Flames of War event called Dynamo 2010 in Vejle, Denmark, which is just a short drive north of where I live. It was being held in the city’s premier culture centers called Bygningen (The Building).
Organized by Jesper Hvid, Dynamo is now in its third year of operation.
I decided to go up on Saturday, which was the first “full” day of the event – taking place from 0830 to approximately 2300. By this time, the first round had been played the evening before.
Dynamo was designed to be a round-robin 1750 point, Midwar Axis vs Allied tournament with an interesting 21-point system that was based on the original 7-point FoW system:
- A victory of 7-0 gave 21 points
- A victory of 6-1 gave 18-20 points
- A victory of 5-2 gave 15-17 points
- A victory of 4-3 gave 12-14 points
There were 5 individual, unique missions, each set up twice over a total 10 tables:
- The Factory – “The Battle in the city has been raging on for several weeks now. To gain foothold in this important part of the city it is your objective to gain control of the factory in North sector.”
- The Fort – “The famous fort in the Al-Qua desert plays a vital role in controlling the desert.”
- To ensure that you can control this part of the desert, you been given the task to capture this stronghold.”
- The Swamp – “You found a chink in your opponents army and have a chance to break through. Only problem is that its in the middle of the swamp!”
- The Wadi – “You find yourself in a maze of rocks and debris. Echo’s bouncing of every wall around you makes it hard to spot your enemies. Is it your own armour or an enemy tank you can hear?”
- City Fight – “The Battle in the city has been raging on for several weeks now. To gain foothold in this important part of the city it is your objective to gain control of the center of the West sector.”
The final point results were as follows:
- Jesper Lindbæk Allied 19 16 15 20 21 91
- Jan Haurum Axis 19 18 12 20 6 75
- Steffan Larsen Allied 21 3 4 19 20 67
- Lasse Jacobsen Axis 9 18 4 18 18 67
- Bret Donaghy Axis 5 19 15 2 18 59
- Orla Møller Axis 20 18 6 9 3 56
- Denni Brøndum-Hansen Axis 3 20 14 4 15 56
- Christian Trebbien Allied 6 18 21 3 7 55
- Kim Andersen Allied 18 8 15 6 8 55
- Vagn Tind Allied 1 9 9 15 18 52
- Kasper Jensen Axis 2 15 15 15 3 50
- Jesper Christensen Allied 15 3 6 21 3 48
- Michael Trillingsgaard Allied 12 2 17 9 2 42
- Bo Ejstrud Axis 15 18 4 1 3 41
- Martin Simonsen Allied 2 3 6 23 6 40
- Michael Juel Andersen Axis 6 3 6 6 18 39
- Niels P.S. Petersen Allied 16 3 7 1 6 33
- Christian Skovgaard Axis 3 5 9 3 13 33
- John Kløjgaard Allied 6 1 12 3 3 25
- Anders K Laursen Axis 6 2 3 1 3 15
My overall impressions were very positive. The atmosphere was very relaxed without any sort of tension between opponents. I got the idea that they were friends playing one another and not just one person trying to defeat the other.
The terrain, for the most part, was really impressive. The City Fight and Factory boards were very much my favorite, bringing a true “Call of Duty” feel just being a spectator.
Here are some more hi-res pics of the event to give you a good sample of what I saw.
Jesper Hvid, the aforementioned organizer of Dynamo, told me that he is also launching a new series of terrain next month – and based on what I saw there at the show, it’s going to be a hit in the Flames of War community.
Dynamo 2010 was a pretty nice way to spend a Saturday. My thanks to everyone involved.

nice update. i haven’t played FoW yet, but have read up about it a lot. Did you play at all or just go check it out?
I didn’t play – I was there on an invite to do this report. There were only 20 spots available to even it out, so even if I wanted to, I would have had to be on standby.
It is a solid game system which isn’t too hard to learn. If you don’t mind starting a new wargame and have the $ to spend, I’d put it solidly behind 40K and Field of Glory.
