The Transition from PC to Mac…(it’s sneakier than a ninja)
There comes a point in everyone’s life when you’re forced to eat your own words. We’ve all been there, faced with the painful yet inevitable reality of having to swallow our pride. As surprising as it may be, despite my awesome beard, I found myself in just such a place a couple of short years ago where I got to taste my foot, yet again.
There’s something you need to know about me, I was a PC, now I’m a Mac. I made the switch that I said I never would, and you’re going to be the next victim, just wait. Before we hit on why Apple is so awesome, lets look at why I vehemently refused to come over to the dark side.
Well…that would be the reason I guess, I saw Apple and anything Mac as the dark side. Every Mac user I knew had completely decked their lives out in Apple products. I’m a bit of a counter culture goer. So the cool, good looking, hipsters with their summertime scarves, tight jeans, and floppy hats all had Macs, as did all the guys I worked with at this mega-church. iMac’s, iPhones, iPods, Macbooks, I couldn’t get away from them. I couldn’t understand why every accessory had to be white and have an Apple logo. I was a avid PC gamer and had a custom home built monstrosity of tower in a glowing brushed aluminum Cooler Designs case and it kicked butt. Everybody knew that PC’s did everything Mac’s do but cheaper. Well, every PC user thought that.
Second reason I hated Apple was because their users where pricks, tools if you will. Plain and simple, every Mac user I knew loved to flaunt their laptops and iPods with an air of superiority. Arrogant bastards, well practiced in the art of douchebaggery. Well I figured I’d teach them by staunchly holding to my PC guns.
Then, it happened. I was working with a non-profit that had iMacs for video and audio work; I settled into using them and got my first taste of real oxygen. Then our laptop died and we got a great deal on a black macbook. I discovered how truly intuitive Macs are in comparison to PC’s once you unlearn your UI habits.
Problem was, my Blackberry didn’t sync with Macs at the time, even though I was using Outlook on it. The only way to sync was with a hack for the BB that was only moderately reliable at the best of times. So I was bouncing information between a lappy, phone, and PC at home. At the end of that summer I was gifted an iPhone, the brand new 3G that had just been released on AT&T’s network. I tasted pure oxygen yet again that day and never looked back.
The home desktop was next to go, replaced by a Mac mini attached to my tv. Then the wireless router got replaced by an Airport Express, and later linked to an Airport Extreme to increase my web speeds, the Express now a device connecting my printer to my network. My christmas list is a 4G iPhone when they drop next year as well as a 2nd Gen iPad when they come out as well. I’m hardcore, life long Mac, and I never saw it coming.
Keep your eyes open for upcoming posts on integrating Apple into your life and why Mac isn’t for everyone. Have you made the switch to PC or Mac and if so tell us why.

I used a Mac for work for a year, and there were some awesome things about the UI. I never got used to not having focus-follows-mouse, though. Of course, since I am a linux-user, I have simply taken the things I liked about the Mac UI without having to give up focus-follows-mouse. Also, I don’t have to provide free advertising for Apple every time I take my laptop into a public place.
I also like my Android phone, but to be fair, I’ve never actually used an iPhone. I did get really irritated trying to find actual hardware specs on the iPhone when I was choosing a phone, but ultimately, the decision was a price decision. The top-tier android phone cost me 30 euros with a contract, and the newest iPhone would have cost many times that.
yeah apple has the market on the $$ signs. My friend and gaming partner manages a Radio Shack and was telling me how as iPhone retailers they have a very limited stock number, and Apple has always been strict on their product sales in product information releases.
The iPhone going to Verizon in the US this year will make a big difference and hopefully will bring the data plan costs down so it’s more competitive with other smart phone plans. Not going to lie though, i love me some iPhone.
correction, this coming year (2011). sorry about that, realize it read wrong.
Great article bro……I went to the dark side after college and never looked back either. Maybe one day it will be easier to build your own Mac and then we’ll have the best of both worlds.
