Free Form Friday: My heart has fallen down around my ankles like a wet pair of pants

Welcome to yet another version of Free Form Friday!

Where do you live? What’s that smell? What are you doing with my sister?

The above sentences are all questions. By asking questions we learn more about the world and the people we know, or it just creates more questions which lead us to discover that we actually knew less than we did in the first place, or does it?

I do receive a lot of emails as well as comments that are questions, but many a times people tend to ask questions in comments that are relevant to the post and so I thought it would be a good idea to answer any question you feel like asking.

So, anyway – on with it:

Who do you see winning the 2011 Origins Awards? – Cat, via email

It’s no secret that I think that the Origins Awards are dodgy at best. In fact, I don’t really consider them worth caring about. Why? GAMA’s whole game plan (no pun intended) is to promote and expand game sales via the traditional distributor/retailer/consumer model. So what do we get? Lots of the same-old same-old every year -  revised editions and licensed products out the ass.

But I digress. If I were to call the winners:

Best Roleplaying Game

  • Dragon Age, Set 1 – Green Ronin Publishing

Best Roleplaying Supplement

  • Advanced Player’s Guide (Pathfinder RPG) – Paizo Publishing

Best Board Game

  • Castle Ravenloft – Wizards of the Coast

Best Traditional Card Game

  • Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer – Gary Games

Best Family, Party or Children’s Game

  • Zombie Dice – Steve Jackson Games

Best Gaming Accessory

  • Adventurers Tiles – Battle Bunker Games

Best Miniatures Rules

  • MERCS Games Rule – MERCS Miniatures, LLC

Best Historical Board Game

  • Panzer General: Allied Assault – Petroglyph Games, Inc.

Best Game-Related Publication

  • No Quarter Magazine – Privateer Press

And as a closing to this – if Green Ronin’s Dragon Age Set 1 does not win, the terrorists have won. It is probably the single greatest RPG to come along in years.

What are your thoughts on the OSR movement? - Michael, via email

Again, I’ll go back to something I’ve said in the past, and that is the OSR movement can best be compared to a bowel movement. I think it collapsed under its own weight a long time ago and is rather irrelevant. Those that don’t consider themselves to be a part of said “movement” but continue to create OSR stuff are the ones worth my time.

What are your top 3 funniest moments from movies - Sanne, student

  1. Only You, from Hot Shots!
  2. Thank Heaven for Little Girls from My Father the Hero (you need to see the movie to get the context)
  3. The fire scene from The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

Anyway, that’s all for this week! Check back again next Friday for our new guy Maurice’s first FFF installment!
