THOR: A Geekcentric Review

Today’s review of THOR was contributed by Darrell Coon. He is the husband to one, father to six, and an inspiration to millions.

The gods are good, well at least the movie gods. I took my 5 year old to see Thor today and even his short attention span couldn’t pull away. Thor is visually stunning, action packed, and a great adaptation of Thor’s origin.

Was it exactly the way it was in the comics? Not entirely, but it worked and it worked well.

First, let me confess I do lean toward fanboy-ishness at times, so it’s difficult to remain objective. That being said, if something is crap (in my ever-so-humble opinion) then I am the first one to shout it from the nearest rooftops. However, in the case of Marvel’s latest turn, I feel safe saying that comic book fans, as well as the average Joe who wouldn’t know Thor from the Scarlet Witch, will intensely enjoy this film.

Thor, while loaded with action and effects (I mean come on, they brought Asgard to life) never skimps on story and the trials and visible development of Thor is nothing short of divine.

Awesome Aussie Chris Hemsworth embraced the role of Thor and made it his own, Anthony “I Eat People’s Brains” Hopkins as Odin Allfather is…well, he’s Anthony “Hello Clarice” Hopkins, stellar as always. Tom Hiddleston made for a perfect Loki: brooding and jealous, brimming with power and desire. Of course, I can’t NOT acknowledge Natalie Portman; she is an awesome actress and a sublimely beautiful woman, her movie chops have improved dramatically since her Padmè days and it shows in Thor. If I was an exiled Norse God I’d fall for her too.

Thor also had all the tie ins we normally expect to the other Avengers related movies, a surprise one early on that had me on the edge of my seat. Stan Lee, as always, in his awesomeness made a cameo, just all the fun things we have come to expect from a Marvel movie.

In closing… go see Thor, if you haven’t already! It’s truly a contender for “Best Marvel Movie to Date” and leaves me wanting more. It’s the type of movie that reminds us why we love comics and why we all need a hero.
