Top 10 Countdown: Saga Edition

In case you haven’t noticed, there are enough songs and parodies about Star Wars floating around the internet to fill a star destroyer.  What follows is my attempt to bring order to the force… err, let me rephrase that: What follows is my attempt to bring the best of them together in one place for your enjoyment.

Without further ado, I present to you my Top 10 Countdown: Saga Edition, my Geekcentric Guide to the best Star Wars songs and song parodies from the entire galaxy.

Top 10 Countdown: Saga Edition

10.  (tie)  ”We Didn’t Start the Star Wars” by Mikey Squirrel

Mikey freely admits that his singing isn’t going to win him any awards, but with his parody of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” he’s compiled an amazing list of just about everything Star Wars related.  If the vocals were better, I would’ve put this one higher on the list for the sheer genius of the lyrics.  Oh well.

10.  (tie)  ”Jabba On the Dais” by Matthew Beall and Petch Lucas

Yes, I had to cop out and make this a tie.  I just couldn’t leave either song off the list.  This parody of one of the most absurd (read: awesome) songs of the 1980′s, Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus,” is every bit as ludicrous as the source material and then some.  This one just defies description.  It would’ve been higher on the list but for the cacophonous mess near the end.  The video is well done though, and the singing is better than the other song at #10 on this list.   Bonus points for the incredibly creepy sounding, but informative intro.

9.  ”Han Solo” by MC Chris

The first of two songs on this list by the rapper, voice actor, writer and comedian born Christopher Brendan Ward, IV.  MC Chris is one of the most well-known purveyors of what is known as nerdcore hip-hop.  This is his tribute to a certain space cowboy.

8.  ”Chewbacca” by Supernova

This song by the Orange County punk band Supernova was featured in Kevin Smith’s film Clerks.  The animation in this video is hilarious.  I just wish the song was longer.

7.  ”Vader” by the Taj Motel Trio

Ska-punk + Star Wars = WIN.  An overweight Darth Vader dancing around in swim trunks, not so much.  Still, the song and video by this band from my neighboring state of Georgia is pretty damn good.

6.  ”Fett’s Vette” by MC Chris

The second song on this list by MC Chris is also the second song on this list that was featured in a movie.  This one’s from Zack and Miri Make a Porno.  Enjoy.

5.  ”Mind Trick” by 2 Skinnee J’s

2 Skinnee J’s is a nerdcore hip-hop group that originally formed at New York’s Columbia University in 1991.

4.  ”Yoda” by “Weird Al” Yankovic

Weird Al’s venerable parody of The Kinks’ “Lola” is a classic.

3.  ”Star Wars Cantina” by Richard Cheese

Mark Jonathan Davis is a musician and comedian better known as Richard Cheese.  Think about that for a second.  It’s a shame that he’s not as well known as “Weird Al” but that’s probably because most of his material is a bit less politically correct than the more famous Mr. Yankovic.  And when I say “a bit” I mean a lot.  This phenomenally well-done parody of Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana (At the Copa)” is one of his more tame creations.  Mr. Cheese, I have just one question for you.  Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his discography?

 2.  ”Galactic Empire State of Mind” by College Humor

I’m not sure who’s actually doing the singing here, but this parody of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” is definitely one of the best Star Wars song parodies around and is well deserving of the number 2 spot on this list.  The video is hilarious, with breakdancing stormtroopers, Ewoks, and Wookies, along with Leia’s incredible headphones.

1.  ”The Saga Begins” by “Weird Al” Yankovic

As far as Star Wars song parodies go, it doesn’t get any better than Weird Al’s classic parody of Don McLean’s seemingly endless “American Pie” whose running time I swear sometimes feels as long as any of the Star Wars movies.

There you have it, fellow geeks!  I hope you enjoyed this countdown, even without Rick Dees or Casey Kasem.
