Let the countdown to ComicCon NYC begin…
Last year was my first time experiencing the spectacle that is Comic Con. This year it is back for its 6th year in my home town of New York City. With about a month and a half to go before the October 13th start of the epic Comic Con weekend, all I can say is “Bring It!” Last year the Con was packed, that was my only complaint, there were just too many people. As I made my way into the massive Jacob Javits Center, I felt like we were all sheep being led into the place. However the lines, the crowdedness and the body odors of many couldn’t deter me from enjoying myself as I marveled at it all. I was really impressed and a bit shocked at how committed some of my fellow geeks truly are as they walked around in their ‘cosplay’. The costumes were amazing and for some, a bit embarrassing, but all fun. In the end my fist time was a learning expereice and an enjoyable one. I anticipate this year’s con as a wiser geek and will take what I learned last year to improve my geekgoer experience.
Five things to keep in mind when going to a Con that I learned are as followed.
1. You get offered a lot of free stuff, its ok not taking everything being offered to you (unless you really want it). If you know yourself to be a freebee hound, then bring a spacious comfortable backpack. Last year I brought a small messenger bag and it turned out to be useless.
2. Bring water, it’s expensive there.
3. Wear comfortable shoes, you will be walking a lot!!!
4. Bring a camera. Last year I brought my little point and shoot, the photographer in me wished I had brought my DSLR to get better photos, but I was happy with what I got.
5. Plan you day out but take your time. There are panel discussion and other events at the Con that you may want to check out. If you are going with friends, plan the day out so your not rushing from one thing to another.
And there you have it come October 13-16, guess where I’ll be? We’ll be reporting from the Con and hopefully speak to artists, creators and maybe some cool folks dressed in cosplay. If you see us there don’t forget to say hi. Comic Con New York here we come.
