Review: Star Wars Crimson Empire III: Empire Lost (2 of 6)

When last we met there was a story unfolding. A story of galactic proportions. I however was not that impressed. But and here is the big but, I was curious to see where this story was going so I gave issue 2 a look and well I must say, now I’m very curious.
Star Wars Crimson Empire III: Empire Lost continues the story of Kir Kanos, the last of Emperor Palpatines Royal Red Guards. He’s dangerous or at least we are meant to think this. I remember them in Return of the Jedi and they just stood there. Not that menacing if you ask me, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that he’s some kind of super soldier. In this issue there are three stories unfolding. Kanos has been taken to a mysterious location by Boba Fett where a new empire is being birthed and a mysterious and very scared leader is emerging to take back the Empire and destroy the New Republic. Chief of State Leia has an assassination attempt on her life and children and the only one to save her is another mysterious character. Mirith Sinn. I mentioned in the last review that she looks like an X-Men. Well in this issue she looks like Mara Jade, an expanded universe character who was Darth Vaders apprentice and later falls in love with Luke Skywalker. Anywho, Mirith is a reluctant hero as she has mixed feelings about working for Leia being that years ago Darth Vader killed her husband. (you know how that is)
The third story is that of a woman by the name of Feena D’Asta who appears to be the daughter of someone important who has joined this new Empire. Oh and I almost forgot there is actually a fourth story unfolding. A strange piece of rock called Zinethium is stolen and brought to yet another mysterious character who looks like a ninja Darth Vader.
So this issue has set up more questions then answers but I guess thats the point. It is the second of six issues. So for this they get brownie points in that I am intrigued and want to know more.
The story is by Mike Richardson and Randy Stradley. The art is by Paul Gulacy and this is where my complaint is. The art. It seems too over the top and the expressions on peoples faces are way too ugly and dramatic. Also it seems like there is inconsistency in the way each character looks from panel to panel. Almost as if different people had drawn the faces.
In the end like I said I am curious and intrigued and so I will see what happens next. I take back what I said in my first review that I would not continue this series. However I will say this, I will give it two more issues to captivate me. If it does not that I’m out.
